First “3 strikes” notice issued. Do you know if you are at risk?

News today that Telstra Clear have issued a third warning to one of their customers for allegedly infringing copyright. The Recording Industry Association of New Zealand instructed Telstra to do so.

This will be interesting and should the person so issued dispute the notice (they have 35 days to do so), I suspect it will develop into a test case. Regardless of if you support the legislation or not, this could end up affecting you. Do you know what is being downloaded on your or your family’s Computer?

Virus at the Met Service

Did you visit metservice.co.nz during the weather last week? If so you could have been infected with a virus. Hackers somewhere noticed the weather in New Zealand and took the time to hack a computer that displayed the ads on the Met service site. According to industry sources, people visiting the site did not need to click on the ad to become infected.

And I’m sorry to tell you you have a Virus… TUI!

Oh how I laughed at the irony of some bloke from Deli calling a computer tech to tell him his machine is infected. Being the good natured guy I am, I played along for a while just to see what it is he had to say. They are very convincing, I will give them that. He lead me carefully to parts of Windows that most people never see and told me that this was proof that my machine was infected and if I could just pay him $300 he could make it all better. If I had allowed it, he would have remote connected into my machine and had a poke around. Needless to say, when I did let him know his efforts were futile I let him know properly.

What you need to know

No one will call you to tell you about your infection. They don’t know and don’t care.

The scam is all about getting your money and possibly installing a key logger on your computer.

If they have remoted into your computer you should see you Computer Tech as soon as possible.

You may indeed have a virus, but you can’t tell by looking at the things they show you.

If in doubt, give Shaun or Zac a call.
